Can I ride a quad bike on a car licence?

A quad bike falls under the B1 vehicle category according to government classification. This implies that in order to operate a quad bike on public roads, you must possess a valid car driving licence or a B1 licence. Importantly, no other motorcycle licence is permissible for riding a road-legal quad bike.

Although 16-year-olds are permitted to operate certain low-powered motorcycles with an AM motorbike licence, this exception does not extend to quad bikes. Operating a quad bike is restricted to individuals who have successfully completed their car driving test and currently hold a full driving licence, requiring a minimum age of 17 years. It’s essential that the quad bike is type approved, registered, and taxed for all riders.
