Can I ride a quad bike on a car licence?

A quad bike falls under the B1 vehicle category according to government classification. This implies that in order to operate a quad bike on public roads, you must possess a valid car driving licence or a B1 licence. Importantly, no other motorcycle licence is permissible for riding a road-legal quad bike.

Although 16-year-olds are permitted to operate certain low-powered motorcycles with an AM motorbike licence, this exception does not extend to quad bikes. Operating a quad bike is restricted to individuals who have successfully completed their car driving test and currently hold a full driving licence, requiring a minimum age of 17 years. It's essential that the quad bike is type approved, registered, and taxed for all riders.

What is the difference between an ATV and UTV?

An ATV, or 'all-terrain vehicle,' is primarily intended for recreational use. Commonly known as four-wheelers or quads, ATVs are designed for single riders. On the other hand, a UTV, which stands for 'utility task vehicle,' serves a dual purpose of work and recreation. Featuring a cabin that accommodates two to four riders, UTVs are commonly referred to as SxS (side-by-side) vehicles. In summary, while ATVs are geared towards individual recreational riding, UTVs offer a utility-focused design with seating for multiple occupants, making them suitable for both work and leisure activities.

All license holders are now permitted to tow trailers, horseboxes, or caravans without the need for an additional test. However, rules vary depending on when you obtained your driver's license. You are allowed to tow a trailer with a Maximum Authorized Mass (MAM) of up to 3,500kg. Before buying a trailer, it's important to be mindful of your car's towing limit.

Where can I park a Trailer when I’m not using it?

In the UK, when parking your caravan or trailer on the street, it's essential to be considerate to other residents. Ensure the caravan/trailer is well-lit at night, complying with parking rules. Park with the nearside facing the pavement to position rear lights at the back for approaching traffic. If a trailer is detached on a road, at least one wheel must be immobilized using a brake, chain, chock, or another effective device. Additionally, using a hitch lock is recommended to deter thefts of the trailer.
